I got Rune Factory recently on the recommendation of a guy that works at the game store, and I'm passing the recommendation along.

In short, Rune Factory is a Harvest Moon game. Theres a difference though. Rune Factory has a battle system, monsters that you fight and can befriend, and a few good caves to explore. The monsters you befriend come to live on your farm, like cows or chickens would normally, but they can help out on the farm too, with watering and harvesting. Or you can bring a monster pet with you to fight in the caves.

It doesn't seem to be that popular though, which surprises me after playing it, but I guess some people just aren't bored enough for a farming sim. Razz

I do want it, but the fact that Harvest Moon DS was so...buggy...that I picked up other stuff first. If you get a ways without it freezing on you every other game day, let me know Smile

I'm now in Fall on my second year, hasnt frozen once. Cool

@Gand: Well I'd guess thats because it's under a new name. If it was Harvest Moon: Blah blah blah, people would know about it. But Rune Factory (as a name) sounds like another old 3rd party junker game.

On a side note, according to Gamefaqs: a sequel, Rune Factory 2, is coming out in January in Japan, so hopefully we can look forward to a english version probably late next year (...damn slow translators...).

Heres a site I found with some guides and info: http://www.fogu.com/hm/rune_factory/basics/index.php

Sorry for this second post in a row, just wanted to spread some advise to those that are getting this....

FORGING. I cap this because it is super duper important. Once you have the house upgrade (200,000g & 2000 wood to get) you get a place to forge, make decorations and a pharmacy. These 3 are all really good skills to get up, since they are WAY better than the items you can buy from the NPC shops. I really started spamming these in the time between the Mt. Gigant "cave" and the Mistybloom cave, which needs to be winter to enter. Once you pass Mt. Gigant, get your forging up to 40's, and make Star Saber. It's an air elemental sword that will last you for the rest of the story if you want it to easily. All of the materials for it can be found in Mt. Gigant, by mining the ore and getting the wind crystal and bird wing drops from the pink chickens there. You can just spam kill em by killing 1 and not the spawn machine.

FIELDS IN CAVES. The fields in caves need plowing to move on to the next, but its important to fill at least some of these fields to make things easier for you. I suggest using the seed that takes the least time to grow for the season of the cave and filling everything with it. Make sure you water everyday until they are fully grow, or else they will stay seeds or sprouts. Once fully grown, they will never need touching again. Just leave them there and collect the rune swords that spawn in each batch as you need them. The rune stones respawn daily, so no need to replant everything. If you use vegetables that don't have the "Regrow when watered" description, don't harvest them or you'll have to make the fields all over again.

MINING & MONEY. In the beginning first few caves, you probably won't need the ores you get for forging or decors yet, but you should still mine when you have time or HP/RP to spare. Once you have the shelf from Ivan (travelling salesman on Holidays[aka weekends]) you should store all the ore you can, within reason, for later. I suggest Toros cave for this, you can get silver, iron, bronze, iron scrap, and sapphires there by the bucket, as well as a woolly (sheep) spawn near the beginning. Keep the iron, bronze and silver, but sell the sapphires. They will drop in all sorts of item levels, and can make some good money if you get good ones. The sapphires are used for decorations, but not until level 60's, so you're okay there. Once you need gold, I suggest Mt. Gigant. Theres a pack of ores near the entrance, before any mob machines, so do this: run in, mine the ore, leave, repeat as wanted. Theres also 3 field patches there so you can get extra RP too.

PETS. Like any harvest moon game, there are sheep, cow, and chicken-ish monsters. I got mine in: Sheep - Toros cave (go west 1 room, north 1 room, east 1 room), Cow - Mt. Gigant (go west until dead end, then north, its in a small cave), chicken - Mt. Gigant (its a white bird, not the pink ones.) Also, get monsters that can harvest and water your fields. When you get them up to 10 friend points, you'll only need 3 of each to make a full farm almost completely self sufficient. Also get a pet to fight with you. I use a water elemental I got in Toros cave. It uses ranged attacks so it doesn't get hit much, and can heal itself and you a limited number of times. With this pet though, try to keep poisonous monsters of it, as it will waste it's healing ability healing itself every couple of seconds. There are riding monsters too, but they arent very useful IMO.

Wow, didn't think I had that much to say til I started typing... Oh well, hope it helps. Everything else should be obvious or in that site I linked above. Cool

RF2 spoiler: In the sequel, you play as Kyle, a young adult in a new town. The main objective is to build a school there (wierd, but whatever). Once the school is built and you're married with a kid, you get to play as the kid, go to school and whatever. It is set in another town in the Norad kingdom (same country as RF1), but the stories arent connected. The only character that is in both is Cecilia, the little girl from RF1 who is now grow up a little and marriable (for you pedos out there... lol jk.).
